How can I reduce the risk of skin cancer?

  • Avoid being in the midday sun. The sun at its strongest between about 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 during the summer months from April to September. Use plenty of sunscreen on any skin exposed to the sun, including lips, ears, neck, hands, and face.
  • Wear protective clothing. Dark, tightly woven clothing that covers arms and legs does not allow as much sunlight. A broad-brimmed hat provides better protection to the ears than a baseball cap.
  • Do not forget sunglasses. Choose a pair that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Avoid tanning beds. Use of solariums has been proven to increase the chance of developing skin cancer.
  • Be extra careful if you take medicine that makes you sensitive to sunlight. These include some antibiotics, certain medications for high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes, as well as NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
  • Check your skin regularly and show any changes to your doctor.
