“The problem with skin cancer is that many people wait too long to check suspicious skin lesions. A consultation may also take longer than expected, because it is so difficult to get an appointment with a dermatologist. One way to shorten the wait is to allow the specialists to make a rapid assessment looking at digital images with a short description online.”

According to Dr John Paoli, specialist in skin cancer surgery at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, this is an efficient way to get the right patients to clinic in time.

Ex Soccer star and Actor diagnosed with skin cancer

Actor and footballer Vinnie Jones says he has had several lumps removed after being diagnosed with skin cancer.

The 48-year-old first noticed a small blemish below his eye in February, thinking it was “a blackhead or a wart”.

A check-up revealed it was malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, which kills 1,300 men and 900 women every year in the UK. Doctors have since found more tumours, but Jones told The Sun he would fight it with “everything I’ve got”.

20 year-old singer Miley Cyrus has teamed up with famous designer Marc Jacobs for his “Protect The Skin You’re In” campaign, which raises money for the New York University Skin Cancer Institute. Cyrus is featured, buff naked, on a T-shirt Jacobs designed. Proceeds from T-shirt sales will be funneled to the Skin Cancer Institute.

A Smartphone App Saved My Life

Her malignant melanoma was found at an early stage thanks to a clinical digital health study using a smartphone app conducted in the region of western Götaland, Sweden. A week later, the lesion was surgically removed, and today Susann is completely healthy.

“It is very likely that the mobile phone saved my life,” Susann Samuelsson says, a 38-year-old mother of two from the west coast town of Kungsbacka.

Sweden launches first ever cancer app

A hospital in western Sweden is the first in the world to use smartphones to help diagnose skin cancer. A doctor can take a photo of a patient’s condition with their phone, and then using a phone application, they send the picture to the specialist doctor, and get a diagnosis within two days.

Press conference: Smartphone results in faster diagnosis of skin cancer

A pilot project in the region of Västra Götaland has shown that smartphones can shorten the management of suspected skin cancer.

The first results show significantly shortened waiting times for diagnosing and treating patients with malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. This in turn reduces patient anxiety and suffering, and ultimately saves lives.
